Those lucky enough to be born in October not only have two birthstones to choose from, but also a multitude of colors! The tourmaline, named from the Sinhalese (Sri Lanka) "tura mali" meaning "stone of mixed colors", has been found in nearly every hue, though the rubellite (pink) variation remains the most popular. Even those who can't decide on a color may find bi-color tourmalines, such as the red-and-green watermelon variety, or dichroic (color-changing) tourmalines to their liking.
At a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, the tourmaline has a fair durability, but is particularly sensitive to heat and UV radiation from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Steam or ultrasonic cleaning is not recommended. Instead, use a soft cloth with warm water and mild soap.
